Caroline Milner

Caroline Milner serves as a Lecturer (Teaching & Research) in the Division of Cell Matrix Biology & Regenerative Medicine at the University of Manchester's Faculty of Life Sciences. She joined the institution as a Research Fellow in 2006 and advanced to a Lectureship in October 2009 following her extensive research career at the University of Oxford.

Her educational background includes a BA in Chemistry from Wadham College, Oxford (1988) and a DPhil in Biochemistry from Wolfson College, Oxford (1991). Prior to her Manchester appointment, she was a Research Fellow at the MRC Immunochemistry Unit in Oxford, supported by funding from the MRC, ARC, and Nuffield Foundation.

Dr. Milner's research spans two primary domains with significant clinical implications. In mammalian reproduction, she investigates ovulation mechanisms focusing on the cumulus matrix formation and the critical role of TSG-6 protein in HA cross-linking. Her musculoskeletal disease research examines TSG-6's protective functions against inflammation in conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis, with particular emphasis on its inhibition of bone erosion. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through the Manchester Regenerative Medicine Network, Lydia Becker Institute, and Christabel Pankhurst Institute.

Her recent publications demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary approach connecting fundamental biochemistry with clinical applications, particularly in developing novel therapeutic strategies targeting TSG-6 for osteoarthritis treatment and reproductive health. Her research has received attention through multiple media outlets and patent applications.

Dr. Milner currently supervises postgraduate research and her work is funded by grants from the Medical Research Council (MRC) and Arthritis Research UK (ARUK). She maintains active collaborations with clinical partners including the Oxford Fertility Unit.
