Caroline Hornum Martinussen is a PhD Fellow at the Department of Law, Aalborg University, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. She is part of the Global & Transnational Law Research Group and the Offentligret research group. Her research focuses on public international law, particularly international criminal law, international human rights, and international environmental law, with emphasis on the Rome Statute's application to environmental harm and proposed amendments.
Education:
- LL.M. in Criminal Liability under the Rome Statute for Deforestation of the Amazon (2020–2022)
- LL.B. in Law (2016–2019)
Research Interests: Caroline investigates legal mechanisms to prosecute severe environmental harm under the Rome Statute, climate change impacts on international law, biodiversity loss, pollution, and the Rights of Nature. Her work addresses the Triple Planetary Crisis and Indigenous Knowledge systems, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to environmental protection and justice.
Teaching & Administration: She supervises courses on State Institutions, EU Law, and thesis projects. As Administrator of the ELI Nordic Hub, she engages in legal policy initiatives.
Projects:
- International Criminal Law and the Triple Planetary Crisis (2022–2025): Examines legal frameworks for addressing environmental harm through the Rome Statute.
Activities: Presented her PhD project at the Nordic Workshop in Criminal Law 2022 and participated in the ELI Annual Conference 2022, focusing on transnational legal challenges.
