Hanne Hartoft is an Associate Professor at the Department of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Aalborg University. She specializes in children’s rights, social law, and juvenile criminality, with a focus on legal frameworks in Denmark and international conventions like the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Her research bridges legal theory and practical implementation, examining issues like legal certainty, social service oversight, and institutional power dynamics.
Education: Ph.D. in Law (2011–2015), Cand. jur. from University of Copenhagen (pre-1986). She has held legal roles at Advokatfirmaet Lett, Advokatfirmaet Søby og Petri, and AdvokatForum A/S before academia.
Research Interests: Children’s legal rights, social welfare systems, youth detention facility regulations, cross-border family law issues, and disability rights in education. She emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration between law, sociology, and policy studies.
Her recent work critiques Denmark’s 2025 Children’s Act for legal inconsistencies and advocates for stronger protections against social service overreach. She has authored textbooks like Barnets Lov med Kommentarer and contributed to high-profile policy debates in Danish media.
Advisory Roles: Previously served on Børnerådet (Children’s Council) and Det Kriminalpræventive Råd (Criminal Preventive Council). Engaged in projects like Socialret - børn og unge and Children’s Rights - The Convention on the Rights of the Child in Danish Law.
