Dr. Caroline Harvey is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Derby, affiliated with the School of Psychology within the College of Health, Psychology and Social Care. She serves as the Employability Lead for Psychology and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including modules on Nature and Wellbeing, Quantitative Methods, and Research Evaluation. Her research focuses on nature connectedness, compassion in education, and individual differences, with notable collaborations with organizations like the Royal Wildlife Trusts and the Outward Bound Trust. She is Deputy Chair of the Compassion, Contemplation and Emotion Regulation Research Group and the College Research Ethics Committee.
Harvey holds a BSc (Hons) and PhD from the University of Derby, with postgraduate qualifications in Higher Education. Her work spans academic research, evaluation projects, and pedagogical innovation, including developing compassionate communication curricula and nature-based interventions for children and low-income communities. She supervises PhD students researching topics such as compassionate leadership, nature access for marginalized groups, and problematizing social media use in youth.
Her research outputs include peer-reviewed articles on nature interventions, climate change communication, and the Dark Tetrad personality constructs. She has authored technical reports evaluating initiatives like the Play Wild project and Generation Green’s nature education programs. Recent conference presentations highlight her expertise in embedding compassion in education and analyzing the impact of nature-based interventions.
Harvey’s interdisciplinary approach integrates employability skills development, evidenced in collaborative projects like the ‘Big Challenge’ case study. She also delivers short courses on evaluation methodologies and compassionate pedagogy. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications, fostering connections between communities, education, and nature.
