Caroline Deeds is a Lecturer in Documentary and Factual Television at Falmouth University. She holds a background in fine art, having studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Central Saint Martins School of Art. Her work focuses on marginalized communities and socially engaged storytelling, including films about witch camps in Ghana, mental health service users, and prison communities. She has collaborated with renowned artists like Anthony Gormley and Jeremy Deller, contributing to projects such as 'Waseman' and 'English Magic' for the Venice Biennale.
Prior to Falmouth, she taught at the MET Film School and the National Film and Television School. She leads Otherfield, a collective championing independent creative non-fiction film, and operates Pitch Black Films, a production company developing documentary and trans-media projects. Her work emphasizes amplifying underrepresented voices and exploring cultural narratives through film.
Caroline’s research interests bridge art, documentary, and social justice, with a focus on redefining cultural knowledge through projects like The Cultural Encyclopedia, an online resource reordering African narratives. She is committed to fostering emerging filmmakers from underrepresented communities through workshops and outreach programs.
