Her research integrates innovative digital methodologies, such as prosopographical techniques and database development, to study English convents in exile (c.1600–1800). This work highlights the role of women religious as cultural mediators, educators, and patrons. Key outputs include six volumes of primary sources and interpretive essays, plus a digital database enabling interdisciplinary research on early modern women’s contributions.
Bowden’s editorial leadership includes roles with the History of Education Society and the History of Women Religious of Britain and Ireland Website. Her publications span Brill, Cambridge University Press, and Ashgate, addressing topics like conventual literacy, transnational networks, and collective memory formation among exiled religious communities.
