Carolina Malta Hansen

Carolina Malta Hansen is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She conducts research in resuscitation science, sudden cardiac death and inherited cardiovascular disease. She serves in the leadership of the Copenhagen Emergency Medical Services research group and maintains active research collaborations with Duke University, Vienna University, Amsterdam University, and Karolinska Institute.

Her educational background includes specialized training in epidemiology and statistical computer analysis under Professor Christian Torp-Pedersen, and qualitative data collection, analysis, and construction of questionnaire surveys at the National Institute of Public Health in Denmark (mentored by Professor Tine Tjørnhøj-Thomsen). She completed a fellowship at Duke University where she worked with cardiac arrest care and patient outcomes under Professor Christopher Granger, with publications in JAMA (2015;314(3):255-264).

Dr. Hansen's research examines bystander interventions, defibrillation strategies, CPR training in schools, and factors influencing survival after cardiac arrest. Her work spans epidemiological studies of sudden cardiac death trends, family screening protocols following cardiac events, and pragmatic clinical trials to improve emergency cardiac care. She has particular expertise in analyzing registry data and implementing population-level interventions to improve cardiac arrest outcomes.

She has supervised 4 completed Ph.D. theses and currently mentors 3 Ph.D. students as primary supervisor and 3 more as co-mentor. Dr. Hansen is actively involved in clinical trials as Co-PI of the CARAMBA Trial (NCT04446585) and serves on the steering committees of The HeartRunner Trial (NCT03835403) and the NIH-funded RACE-CARS trial (NCT04660526).

As a highly respected researcher in her field, Dr. Hansen is a reviewer for prestigious medical journals including The Lancet, NEJM, JAMA, Circulation, The American Heart Journal, and Resuscitation. Recently appointed as Associate Professor (Klinisk Forskningslektor), she expects to maintain at least 20% protected research time for the next 3-5 years, with plans to apply for a full Professor position focusing on pragmatic clinical trials of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest within approximately 5 years.
