Carolina Alarcón

Dr. Carolina Alarcón is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU), specializing in the early modern period. Her interdisciplinary research explores the intersection of art and science, particularly focusing on prints as tools for cross-cultural communication in scientific and medical knowledge development.

Her book project, Materia Medica: Anatomical Illustrations in Early Modern Spain, connects Spanish anatomical medicine to broader histories of natural science and medical illustration in the 15th–16th centuries. She has organized symposia on art-science intersections at the Lopez Piñero Institute (University of Valencia) and presented her work at prestigious conferences including the Renaissance Society of America and Scientiae.

Professor Alarcón was a Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2018–2020) and held a Fulbright Research Fellowship (2015–2016). Her current research extends her methodologies to analyze 16th-century South American conquest chronicles.
