Carolin Löscher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark. She holds positions in the SDU Climate Cluster, Nordcee, and DIAS. Her work focuses on biogeochemical cycles, nitrogen dynamics, and climate impacts on marine systems. She actively participates in international research networks and leads/co-leads projects like ClimateBlue and CO₂ removal initiatives. Löscher has supervised PhD projects including Mats Jacobsen’s work and contributes to peer-reviewed journals like Science and Elementa. She has received prestigious awards including the Villum Young Investigator Grant and EGU Research highlights.
Research Interests: Her research spans microbial processes in ocean oxygen minimum zones, nitrogen fixation, greenhouse gas cycling, and the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems. She investigates lipid remodeling in phytoplankton under environmental stress and the role of alkaline minerals in CO₂ mitigation.
Key Contributions: Recent work includes sunlight-driven nitrous oxide formation in waters, diazotroph community dynamics in the Southern Indian Ocean, and mesopelagic nitrogen fixation in the South China Sea. Her studies highlight interdisciplinary approaches linking microbial ecology, geochemistry, and climate modeling.
Awards & Activities: Editor of Marine Biology Research, frequent conference presenter, and PI on EU-funded climate adaptation projects. Media engagements include COP28 contributions on CO₂ removal via mineral additions and interdisciplinary climate studies with SDU News.
Grants & Projects: Active in ClimateBlue (EU Coastal Zone Adaptation), CO₂ removal via alkaline minerals (PhD Project), and Arctic nitrogen fixation studies. Collaborates internationally on projects funded by Carlsberg Foundation and Danish Research Councils.
Labs/Teams: Engaged in mesocosm experiments, oceanographic cruises (e.g., METEOR M138), and global diazotroph database initiatives. Her work spans field observations, lab experiments, and computational modeling to address pressing marine environmental challenges.
