Carole V. Bell is an Adjunct Professor of Communication at the University of South Florida’s College of Arts and Sciences. A Jamaican-born scholar with expertise in political communication, media culture, and race studies, she holds a PhD from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on media representation, racial politics, and social identity, particularly in film and television.
She has taught at Northeastern University, George Washington University, and UNC-Chapel Hill, emphasizing political communication and media effects. Her book The Politics of Interracial Romance in American Film examines racial narratives in cinema since the Civil Rights Movement. Bell’s work has been published in International Journal of Press/Politics and edited volumes, and she co-led an Open Society Foundation-funded study on media, race, and presidential politics.
Bell is also a prolific journalist, contributing to NPR, The New York Times, and The Atlantic. Her writing bridges academia and public discourse, analyzing media’s role in shaping cultural and political narratives. She has received grants for research on racial anxiety in elections and incivility in political discourse.
