Carole Holohan is an Assistant Professor in Modern Irish History at Trinity College Dublin's Department of History. Her research focuses on poverty and social history in modern Ireland, particularly the 1960s. She previously held an Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at University College Dublin and taught at St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra. Holohan also led a human rights accountability project at Amnesty International Ireland.
Research Interests: Social history of 20th-century Ireland, poverty studies, youth culture, and the intersection of national and international discourses on social issues. She explores both institutional responses to poverty and personal lived experiences.
Teaching and Supervision: Teaches courses on modern Irish social history, including 'The Republic of Ireland and the Long 1960s' and 'Poverty and Welfare in Modern Ireland'. Supervises M.Phil students and welcomes PhD candidates researching postwar Irish social history, poverty, and welfare.
Key Contributions: Published widely on youth culture and poverty in 1960s Ireland, including her monograph Reframing Irish youth in the sixties (2018). Her work bridges micro-level personal narratives with macro-level policy and international frameworks.
