Carole Chazoule

Carole Chazoule is a Lecturer in Socio-Economics at ISARA Lyon, where she has been a teaching-researcher since September 2003. She currently serves as Deputy Director of the Rural Studies Laboratory (LER), a joint Inrae contract unit under the supervision of ISARA-ISEMA and University of Lyon 2. Her work focuses on the intersection of food systems, territorial development, and socio-economic innovation.

Dr. Chazoule's research interests span multiple dimensions of sustainable food systems:

• Food systems governance and territorial food projects
• Development of middle food systems (Systèmes Alimentaires du Milieu - SYAM)
• Reterritorialization of food systems and quality economy
• Socio-technical networks in food system transitions
• Innovation in food value chains and local food systems

Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on middle food systems (SYAM), which represent hybrid models between short and long food supply chains. These works explore how territories can develop innovative food governance structures that balance local, regional, and global food system dynamics. Her research employs interdisciplinary approaches combining socio-economics, systems engineering, and territorial development frameworks.

Dr. Chazoule leads multiple significant research projects including the ISARA-Lyon Metropolis Agreement (2020-2025), the ISARA/Regional Chamber of Agriculture partnership on 'Complementarity of sectors and territories' (2020-2025), the ANR GinKo project on Geographical Indications (2022-2025), TETRAE TRAACT on agricultural and food transition territories (2022-2025), and ReSysTerr on territorial food system resilience (2023-2025).

Within the academic community, Dr. Chazoule serves as:

• Scientific lead for the ISARA/LER team (8 teacher-researchers) since September 2019
• Member of the CREATE research center at Université Laval, Québec, Canada since 2005
• Member of the Terres d'Initiatives Solidaires de SUEZ foundation since 2021
• Member of the Supervisory Board of Légumerie Rhône Saône Légumes since 2021
• Member of the GOOD Technical Committee for sustainable food events since 2020

Her teaching activities include responsibility for the Program Unit on Quality and CSR in Sustainable Food Systems (4th year), the Food, Health and Sociology module (4th year), and the 'Sustainable Food Systems and Transition' option within the TERREA (Territory, Ecology, Food) advanced studies program.
