Carolann Madden is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Maynooth University (MU) within the Department of Media Studies, part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. She holds a Fulbright Research Fellowship and has contributed to interdisciplinary projects on archival metadata and women’s amateur filmmaking. Her current project, 'Scenes from the West,' examines early Irish home movies and metadata practices for cultural heritage preservation. She previously conducted research at the University of Galway on West of Ireland folklore, resulting in the digital exhibit ThiarWest.
Research interests include archival metadata standards, feminist approaches to film cataloging, Irish folklore, material culture of film, and decentralizing cultural heritage resources. She co-authored the Women in Focus Toolkit and advocates for empowering local organizations to manage audiovisual collections.
Awarded the Fulbright Researcher title, her work bridges academic research with practical solutions for archives. She has collaborated on projects funded by Taighde Éireann/Research Ireland, IRC, and AHRC, focusing on gender representation and metadata innovation. Madden’s contributions extend to MU’s Arts and Humanities Research Institute and faculty committees on teaching, research, and equality initiatives.
