Carola Westermeier

Carola Westermeier is the Head of the Research Group on Technology and Sovereignty at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) and a Visiting Professor of International Relations and International Political Economy at Goethe University Frankfurt. Previously, she held positions at the Technical University Darmstadt and Justus Liebig University Giessen, focusing on sociology and political economy.

Her research bridges economic sociology, international political economy, and critical security studies. Key themes include the interplay of finance and security in post-crisis governance, technological influences on financial security, and the data economy’s infrastructural geopolitics. She leads projects such as Financial Infrastructures and Geoeconomic Security and Money as Data.

Westermeier’s work emphasizes the role of financial technologies in global security frameworks and the implications of data surveillance. Her interdisciplinary approach addresses contemporary challenges in geoeconomic stability and digital governance.
