Carol U. Merriam is a Professor of Classics and Archaeology at Brock University, concurrently serving as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities for a second five-year term. She holds a PhD in Classics from The Ohio State University, following BA (Honours) and MA degrees from Queen’s University at Kingston.
Her research focuses on Latin language and literature, specializing in Elegy, Epyllion, and Ecphrasis. Current projects explore Cornelius Gallus’s role in Latin elegy development and the urban topography of Rome in elegiac poetry, linking these to Augustan ideology and Roman identity. She has published monographs on the epyllion and Augustan elegists’ propaganda, alongside articles on Ovid, Propertius, and Tibullus.
Recent scholarly activities include collaborative editions (e.g., The Life of John Wilkes with Dr. J. Sainsbury) and presentations on topics like Catullus 61 and the Einsiedeln Itinerary. Her work bridges classical texts with interdisciplinary themes such as grief, deception, and modern reinterpretations of ancient poetry.
