Her work spans travel writing, translation studies, and the role of forgotten literary scholars in shaping the European canon. She has led major AHRC-funded projects like European Travellers to Wales 1750-2010 and Travellers to Wales, resulting in a digital database, museum exhibitions, and the website footsteps.bangor.ac.uk.
- Education:
- PhD, Queen Mary University of London
- BA, University of Strathclyde
Her research focuses on 19th-century German-Spanish literary relations, intercultural dynamics, and the impact of travel narratives on national identity formation. She explores how European travelers documented Wales, often overshadowed by England and other Celtic nations, and how these accounts reveal shifting cultural perceptions.
Recent projects include The Lost Literati, analyzing forgotten literary scholars’ contributions to European intellectual networks, and Crossing Borders: World Literatures as Contemporary Romanticism, mapping German Romanticism’s influence in Latin America. Her articles and chapters emphasize translation as a cultural mediator and the intersection of Romanticism with political and gender discourses.
- Scientific Awards:
- Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (2016)
As Pro-Vice Chancellor (Students) at Bangor University (2011-2020) and former Head of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, she has shaped academic policy and promoted modern languages through initiatives like Routes into Languages Cymru. Her supervised PhD student, Sarah Goddard, investigates travel writing across Wales, Brittany, and Galicia.
