Carol Ryff is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her research integrates psychological, social, and biological approaches to examine well-being, resilience, and health disparities across diverse populations.
She directs the MIDUS (Midlife in the U.S.) national study and its Japanese counterpart MIDJA, focusing on how psychological well-being is shaped by social structural factors and linked to biological health markers. Her multidisciplinary work investigates resilience pathways connecting social experiences, psychological functioning, and neurobiological processes.
Her publications consistently explore themes of eudaimonic well-being, resilience across life stages, and cross-cultural variations in psychological health. Recent work examines metabolic health biomarkers, cognitive aging, and social inequalities amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic.
