She leads projects investigating microbial respiration, the microbial carbon pump, and climate impacts on ocean systems. Key affiliations include the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Conservation, and the Marine Biological Association. Her career spans roles at Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the University of Wales, with over 30 research cruises and field studies worldwide.
Education: B.Sc. Zoology (Marine) from the University of Newcastle (1982), Ph.D. Civil Engineering (Public Health) from the University of Newcastle (1987). Academic leadership roles include Deputy Head of School and module organizer for Biological Oceanography. She has supervised numerous PhD students and contributes to ocean policy frameworks like UNESCO’s Ocean Decade program.
