Dr. Carol Halliwell is a Senior Scientist in Urban-scale Modelling Research at MetOffice@Reading, affiliated with the University of Reading's Department of Meteorology. Her research focuses on subgrid-scale mixing in convective-scale versions of the Unified Model, including turbulence schemes and boundary layer dynamics. She holds a PhD in Atmospheric Convection from the University of Leeds and a Bachelor's in Mathematics.
Her work involves idealized modeling to assess subgrid turbulence configurations, stochastic backscatter schemes, and high-resolution simulations (1 km to 100 m). Carol maintains the Idealized Unified Model, supporting both Met Office and external researchers. She contributed to GCSS intercomparisons and developed code features like bi-periodic boundary conditions and Smagorinsky-Lilly-based turbulence schemes.
