Dr. Carol Ekinsmyth is a Principal Lecturer and Associate Head of School (Students) at the University of Portsmouth's School of the Environment, Geography and Geoscience, part of the Faculty of Science and Health. She holds a PhD and BA from the University of Leicester. Her research focuses on the geography of work, enterprise, and gender, with a particular emphasis on women's entrepreneurship, creative economy dynamics, and family policy. She has led projects such as the EU-Interreg-funded 'Accelerating Women's Entrepreneurship' initiative and currently co-chairs the UK Women's Enterprise Policy Group. Notable achievements include winning the Best Overall Conference Paper at ISBE 2023 for her work on enterprise ecosystems in disadvantaged areas.
Her teaching spans modules like 'Uneven Cities, Planning and Design', 'Creative Economy and Urban Placemaking', and fieldtrips to Berlin and Helsinki. She actively contributes to policy reviews, such as the 2022 Enterprise Research Centre report on family policy and entrepreneurship. Current projects include collaborating with Portsmouth City Council on workspace availability for artists.
Research interests integrate economic and social dimensions of work, including gendered practices, self-employment, and work-life balance. She has published extensively on topics like entrepreneurial ecosystems, policy comparisons between France and the UK, and the intersection of family life with business ownership.
