Carol Cleland is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado Boulder and Director of the Center for the Study of Origins. She is also a SETI Institute Affiliate and former collaborator with the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI). Her work bridges philosophy and astrobiology, focusing on the definition and detection of life beyond Earth.
Research Interests: Cleland investigates the philosophical foundations of science, particularly the challenges of defining life and detecting non-Earth-like organisms. She advocates for tentative criteria over rigid definitions in astrobiological research and explores the epistemology of historical sciences like geology and evolutionary biology.
Key Articles: Her publications highlight interdisciplinary themes, including historical contingency in mineralogy, the shadow biosphere hypothesis, and methodological differences between historical and experimental sciences. These works often address the epistemological limits of generalizing from Earth’s life to extraterrestrial possibilities.
Books: Cleland authored The Quest for a Universal Theory of Life (2019) and co-authored The Nature of Life (2010), both offering philosophical frameworks for understanding life’s diversity and origins.
Interdisciplinary Leadership: As director of the Center for the Study of Origins, she fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration between natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities to study historical phenomena like climate change and cultural collapses.
