Sara Walker is a Professor at Arizona State University with joint appointments in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and the School of Complex Adaptive Systems. She is Deputy Director of the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science and Associate Director of the ASU-SFI Center for Biosocial Complex Systems. Her research focuses on astrobiology, theoretical physics, and the origins of life, aiming to develop frameworks for understanding universal features of life and detecting extraterrestrial life.
Walker has pioneered Assembly Theory, a quantitative approach to studying life’s emergence, and her work integrates interdisciplinary methods from physics, chemistry, and computer science. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and a popular book, *Life as No One Knows It*, exploring life’s fundamental nature and potential extraterrestrial forms. Her leadership roles include co-founding the ASU-SFI Center and advising NASA on exoplanet biosignatures.
Key contributions include developing statistical methods for identifying biosignatures in exoplanet atmospheres, analyzing biochemical networks, and exploring the intersection of AI and biological systems. Walker’s research emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and has influenced policy and public discourse on astrobiology and planetary science.
