Carol Atkinson-Palombo is a Professor in the Department of Geography, Sustainability, Community, and Urban Studies at the University of Connecticut's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from Arizona State University and a Master's in Economics from New York University. Her work integrates teaching, research, and community engagement to address societal challenges like sustainable urban development and environmental justice.
Her research focuses on evaluating public policies for sustainable cities, spatial analysis using GIS, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Notable projects include analyzing Light Rail Transit impacts in Phoenix and Denver, Ethiopia-US partnerships for water resource management, and collaborations with Hartford's Blue Hills Civic Association on social/environmental justice issues. She has also examined transportation sustainability indicators and air pollution impacts.
Her publications span urban policy, transportation safety, and energy adoption, reflecting expertise in socio-ecological systems and built environment dynamics. She has advised multiple graduate students and secured funding through USAID and other agencies for applied research projects.
Prof. Atkinson-Palombo's lab engages in community-driven research, emphasizing policy relevance and equity. She leads the Environmental Studies Program and contributes to initiatives like the Resilient Cities, Racism, and Equity (RRCRE) research group at UConn Hartford.
