معرفی
Carmine Maletta is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Design at the Department of Mechanical, Energy and Management Engineering, University of Calabria, Italy, where he has been employed since 2005, first as Assistant Professor (2005-2017) and currently as Associate Professor (since 2017). His academic career is complemented by professional experience as a business consultant at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) from 2000-2002.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Engineering Materials and Structures (2006) and a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, earned Magna cum laude (1999), both from the University of Calabria.
Maletta's research focuses primarily on shape memory alloys, including simulation, thermo-mechanical training, and experimental characterization. His work extends to fatigue and fracture mechanics of engineering materials and numerical methods for structural engineering. His research group, Progettazione Meccanica e Costruzione di Macchine, applies these methodologies across automotive, naval, and aerospace sectors, with particular emphasis on smart materials development for applications ranging from automotive to oil & gas and nuclear industries.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on shape memory alloys (particularly NiTi), with significant contributions to understanding fatigue crack growth, thermomechanical characterization, and novel applications in vacuum technology and medical devices. His work bridges fundamental material science with practical engineering applications.
- Cooperation Associate at CERN (2015-present)
- Young researcher award at University of Calabria (2015)
- AIAS award for paper 'Fatica oligociclica in una lega NiTi pseudoelastica' (2013)
- Member of editorial boards for Shape Memory and Superelasticity (Springer), AIMS Material Science, Materials (MDPI), and Fracture and Structural Integrity
Maletta leads multiple research projects including Thalassa, ARIA, SMA Couplers with CERN, InSPiRATiON, and NextTower, focusing on advanced materials for various industrial applications. He has co-founded the spin-off company 2SMArtEST (2019) and serves on the executive committee of the Italian Group on Fracture since 2011. His laboratory work includes mechanical characterization of materials and experimental testing facilities managed through the Department of Mechanical, Energy and Management Engineering.
