Carmen Varela is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Florida State University's College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on thalamic networks and their role in learning, memory, and adaptive behavior across the sleep-wake cycle. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2008.
The Varela Lab investigates spike and local field potential dynamics in thalamic circuits, particularly during sleep spindles. Current projects include analyzing memory consolidation mechanisms, developing closed-loop techniques for regulating sleep oscillations, and studying thalamic activity's impact on sleep stability. Her work is funded by NIH, Whitehall Foundation, and Alzheimer's Association grants.
Her lab's publications highlight expertise in behavioral and systems neuroscience, computational modeling, and electrophysiology. Collaborative training opportunities involve advanced techniques like optogenetics and ripple density analysis. Lab members come from multidisciplinary backgrounds in neuroscience, computer science, and engineering.
