Carmen Kung is an Honorary Research Fellow at Macquarie University's Department of Linguistics, affiliated with the Centre for Language Sciences (CLaS). She concurrently holds a Senior Research Scientist position at the National Acoustic Laboratories since April 2020. Her research focuses on real-time language processing, particularly how prosody influences semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic comprehension in diverse populations including monolinguals, second-language learners, and hearing-impaired individuals. She employs advanced techniques such as eye-tracking, EEG, MEG, and behavioral measures.
External roles include collaborations with the National Acoustic Laboratories, emphasizing auditory research. Key projects include CLaS initiatives (2019-2021) and Phonetics Laboratory facilities (2015), where she contributed to interdisciplinary language and speech research.
Her work spans pediatric audiology, healthcare policy for Indigenous populations, and neurocognitive mechanisms of language processing. Recent studies address ear health checks for Aboriginal children and clinical practices for hearing loss. Over 14 peer-reviewed articles highlight her contributions to language neuroscience and applied public health.
Her research impacts include developing tools like PLUM and HATS for hearing screening in Indigenous communities, recognized in news and academic platforms. She collaborates internationally, with projects emphasizing cross-cultural and clinical applications of linguistics.
