Dr. Carmen Gebhard is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. Her academic career spans roles at institutions including the University of Nottingham and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna. She holds a PhD in Comparative Politics from the University of Vienna and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Her research focuses on European Union foreign and security policy, EU-NATO relations, and the foreign policies of small states. Key themes include inter-organisational cooperation, strategic studies, and the politics of knowledge production in European Studies. She has published extensively on topics like EU defense cooperation (PESCO), transatlantic security dynamics, and regional autonomies.
Gebhard co-edits the journal Defence Studies and has supervised numerous PhD students, including Augustin Mari and Gent Cakaj. She has held visiting fellowships at institutions such as the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels and the University of Cambridge.
