Carmen Agouridis is a Professor in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering and serves as the Senior Associate Dean for Instruction at the University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. She holds a multidisciplinary academic background with degrees in biosystems engineering, public policy, and business administration.
Her research interests include stream restoration, stormwater management, mined land reclamation, water quality, best management practices, conservation, and STEM/environmental education. She integrates applied research with extension outreach to address natural resource challenges in agricultural, urban, and mining-impacted landscapes.
The trend in her recent publications shows a strong focus on hydrologic and geomorphic processes in disturbed environments, particularly Appalachian mining regions and karst systems. Her work spans methodological development in sensor evaluation, GIS-based stream mapping, numerical modeling of sediment carbon, and practical design of stormwater and reclamation structures. She frequently collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and emphasizes field-based validation of models.
- American Society of Biological and Agricultural Engineers’ 2014 A.W. Farrall Young Educator Award
Dr. Agouridis has served as principal or co-principal investigator on over $9.4 million in grants and has advised more than 30 undergraduate and graduate research projects. She is a certified professional engineer in Kentucky and a former member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on Earth Resources. Her extension role enables broad dissemination of research findings to practitioners and policymakers.
She is actively involved in laboratory and field research, leading studies on mine spoil reclamation, infiltration basin design, soil phosphorus dynamics, and low-permeability barrier development. Her leadership in academic administration complements her research and teaching mission, focusing on pedagogy and higher education administration.
