Carmel Chiswick is a Research Professor in the Department of Economics at George Washington University (GWU) and holds the title of Professor Emerita from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is also a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn, Germany. Chiswick earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University, with a focus on economic development and economic history. Her career includes roles at USAID, the United Nations, and the World Bank, as well as visiting appointments at universities in the U.S. and Israel.
Her research spans labor economics, economic demography, and the economics of religion. Key areas include household work dynamics, immigration impacts, and the intersection of economic systems with religious practices, particularly among American Jewish communities. She has conducted extensive studies on Thailand's economic development, focusing on labor markets and education systems. Recent work examines how economic choices influence religious continuity and observance in Judaism.
Chiswick’s publications analyze topics like religious denominationalism, the economic determinants of ethnic assimilation, and historical migration patterns. Her work bridges economic theory with sociocultural phenomena, offering insights into both macroeconomic development and micro-level cultural adaptation.
