Carlos Rivas is an Assistant Professor of History of Art and Ethnic Studies at The Ohio State University, College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD in Art History from UCLA and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Riverside. His interdisciplinary research focuses on colonialism in Central America, 20th-century mass migration during armed conflicts in El Salvador and Guatemala, and contemporary artistic expressions in the Central American diaspora in the U.S. Born in East Hollywood to Salvadoran war refugees, Rivas is an advocate for social justice, particularly supporting immigrant communities. He has taught at UCLA, Pitzer College, and Cal State Long Beach, and is active in Latinx artist and activist collectives in Southern California.
