Carlos Murillo is a Professor and Chair of Theatre Studies at The Theatre School of DePaul University in Chicago, where he also heads the BFA Playwriting Program. A Chicago Southsider of Colombian and Puerto Rican heritage, Murillo is an internationally produced and award-winning playwright whose work spans multiple continents and theatrical traditions.
Murillo's research interests focus on the intersection of playwriting, cultural identity, and social commentary. His work often explores themes of violence, immigrant experience, and American identity through innovative theatrical forms. He has developed a distinctive approach that blends traditional dramatic structure with metafictional elements, creating works that challenge conventional storytelling while addressing pressing social issues. His plays frequently examine the complexities of Latino-American experience and the ways in which personal and collective histories shape contemporary identity.
Murillo's body of work represents a significant contribution to contemporary American theatre, with publications and productions spanning two decades. His plays demonstrate a consistent engagement with American culture, often using experimental forms to explore identity politics, historical memory, and social violence. The thematic threads connecting his work include a deep concern with how stories are told, who gets to tell them, and how narrative shapes our understanding of reality.

Murillo is actively involved in Chicago's theatre community, recently directing the world premiere of 'Killing of a Gentleman Defender' at DePaul's Healy Theatre. His work continues to evolve through collaborations with students, professional theatres, and community organizations, particularly his ongoing engagement with Chicago youth through theatre-based projects addressing urban violence.
