Carlos Martin is a Full Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zaragoza, Spain (since 2005). Previously, he served as Assistant Professor at the same institution (1992-2005), Research Assistant at the Pasteur Institute Paris (1989-1992), and held postdoctoral fellowships at the Pasteur Institute (1987-1988) and Fundación Marqués de Valdecilla (1986). He has over 30 years of expertise in mycobacterial genetics and molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis, leading the development of novel TB vaccines like MTBVAC.
- MD and PhD in Medicine
- Specializes in tuberculosis vaccine mechanisms, bacterial genetics, and pathogenicity
- Led collaborative TB research projects across Europe, Africa, and America
His work focuses on improving tuberculosis vaccines through molecular genetic approaches, studying virulence factors, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. His research has been continuously funded by Spanish Ministry of Health and European Union programs since 1992.
Recent publications highlight his breakthroughs in aerosol TB vaccine delivery (2021), lineage-specific vaccine potential (2020), and demonstrating MTBVAC's non-specific immune effects (2020). His team's work has led to first-in-human trials of live-attenuated TB vaccines (2015) and discovery of key virulence regulators like phoP (2001).
Scientific Awards & Honors:
- 2017 Elected Member of Royal Academy of Medicine of Zaragoza
- 2010 Research Prize from Gobierno de Aragón
- 2006 Prize from Fundación Ecología y Desarrollo
- 1987 EMBO Short-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship
- Contributor to Spain's National Plan Against TB (2007)
His research group, affiliated with CIBERES (respiratory disease network) and Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI), has secured continuous funding since 1992 from national and EU programs. He has published 189+ articles with over 10,000 citations and an h-index of 45.
