Carlos L. Arteaga, M.D., is the Director of the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and Associate Dean of Oncology Programs at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He holds the Annette Simmons Distinguished University Chair in Breast Cancer Research and has over 350 publications in breast cancer research, including oncogenes, tumor progression, targeted therapies, and clinical trials.
Dr. Arteaga earned his medical degree from the University of Guayaquil in Ecuador and completed training in internal medicine and medical oncology at Emory University and the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. His research has been funded by the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Department of Defense, and other major foundations.

Dr. Arteaga has received prestigious awards including the AACR Rosenthal Award, ACS Clinical Research Professor Award, and Gianni Bonadonna Award. He is a Fellow of AAAS and AACR Academy and serves on advisory boards for major cancer organizations.
His laboratory focuses on translational breast cancer research, including mechanisms of antiestrogen resistance and genomic alterations like FGFR1 and CCND1 amplifications. He co-chaired the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium and leads initiatives in precision oncology through NCI-MATCH trials.
