Carlos Jorge Fonseca da Costa

Carlos Jorge Fonseca da Costa serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, Sociology and Management (DESG) at the School of Human and Social Sciences, University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), while also holding the position of Vice-Director for the Doctoral Program in Agribusiness and Sustainability and collaborating with the Center for Transdisciplinary Studies for Development (CETRAD).

His academic qualifications include:

• Degree in Agronomy
• Master's degree in Extension and Rural Development
• PhD in Agricultural Economics

His research concentrates on rural development frameworks, specifically analyzing competitiveness dynamics in quality agri-food value chains and strategic deployment of local natural resources for sustainable territorial growth. This work integrates agricultural economics with practical development methodologies to strengthen rural economies through innovation in resource management and value addition.

As principal investigator and local coordinator, he leads multiple European and nationally funded research initiatives. He has produced over 20 scientific papers and technical publications in his domain, and previously held the leadership role of Department Director within DESG.
