Carlos Javier Castro Brunetto serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History and Philosophy at Universidad de La Laguna, Spain, affiliated with the IEMYR research institute and the "a+m+d Arte, Moda e Identidad" (Art, Fashion and Identity) research group.
His academic foundation includes a PhD from Universidad de La Laguna (1993) with the dissertation "Iconografía franciscana en Canarias (escultura y pintura)", supervised by Dr. María del Carmen Fraga González.
Castro Brunetto's research is structured around three core domains:
- Iconographic analysis of Baroque art across Spain and Iberoamerica, with emphasis on religious orders' artistic production, complemented by comprehensive studies of 18th-century art in Spain and France.
- Historical trajectory of Brazilian art from 16th-century indigenous representations through colonial manifestations to 19th-20th century theoretical-iconographic frameworks.
- Cultural-artistic evolution of fashion history, investigating its socioeconomic significance from the 18th century to contemporary identity formations.
He actively contributes to the IEMYR institute's interdisciplinary initiatives through the "a+m+d Arte, Moda e Identidad" group, which examines intersections between visual culture, sartorial expression, and societal identity constructs.
