Carlos Gustavo Halaburda is an Assistant Professor of Latin American Literature at the University of Chicago, affiliated with the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. He holds a PhD in Luso-Hispanic Studies and Critical Theory from Northwestern University and an MA in History from the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on intersections of queer theory, disability studies, and critical race theory, with a geographic emphasis on the Southern Cone and Latin America. He is currently completing a book project analyzing fin-de-siècle Argentine theatre's engagement with queerness, disability, and degeneration theory.
His research interests include global nineteenth-century studies, modern Latin American literature, Argentine LGBT cultures, and the medical humanities. He has held prestigious fellowships, including a Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellowship at Universität zu Köln and support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. His work bridges literary analysis with historical and scientific discourses, critiquing colonial and patriarchal systems of bodily classification.
Halaburda teaches courses on Latin American literatures, queer cultural history, and modern Argentine theatre. Recent courses include 'Sex, Crime, and Horror in Argentine Literature' and 'Queerness and Disability in Latin American Culture, 1880-1930.' His scholarship has appeared in journals like Latin American Theater Review and Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispánicos, and he has received awards for his innovative work in sexualities studies.
His academic affiliations extend to the Center for Latin American Studies and the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality at the University of Chicago, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to cultural production and social theory.
