International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratoryمعرفی
Carlos Gonçalves serves as a Research Fellow in the Water Quality Research Group at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) since 2023, focusing on nanomaterials and microdevices for environmental and food contaminant management. Previously, he conducted research at IDAEA-CSIC (Spain), University of Ioannina (Greece), and the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (Belgium), while lecturing hydrology and organic chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto.
His educational foundation includes a pharmaceutical sciences degree and PhD in Hydrology from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto. This dual background enables his interdisciplinary work bridging environmental and food safety sciences.
Gonçalves' research demonstrates exceptional specialization in analytical methodology for contaminants, with two primary thrusts: environmental chemistry (priority/emerging pollutants like pesticides and pharmaceuticals through monitoring, fate studies, and ecotoxicity) and food chemistry (mass spectrometry-based analysis of mycotoxins, plant toxins, and additives). His expertise in sample preparation, chromatography, and mass spectrometry directly supports EU food safety legislation through CEN standardization and crisis response.
His publication trajectory (40+ papers, 7 book chapters, 11 policy reports) reveals consistent evolution toward validated, regulatory-ready analytical solutions. Recent work emphasizes collaborative trial validation (2022), interlaboratory performance characterization (2020), and immunoassay refinement (2016) – demonstrating growing impact on food safety protocols. Earlier environmental studies (2011-2012) established his contaminant degradation expertise using solar photocatalysis.
As a scientific officer for EU Reference Labs (mycotoxins, feed additives, food contact materials), Gonçalves bridges research and policy implementation. His 21 international conference presentations highlight active knowledge dissemination, while his role in the Espiña Research Group at INL drives next-generation contaminant detection technologies through nanomaterial innovation.
