Carlos Barceló Seguí

Dr. Carlos Barceló Seguí is a Tenured Contract Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biology at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), where he has been actively contributing since 2009. He specializes in vector ecology, entomology, and zoology, with extensive research experience in insect vectors of diseases.

His educational background includes a BSc in Biology from UIB (2011), an MSc in Marine Ecology (2014), and a PhD in Biotechnology (2019) focused on the seasonality and bionomics of Culicoides sp., the main vectors of Bluetongue virus in Spain.

Dr. Barceló's research spans several critical areas in vector ecology:

• Vector ecology and surveillance systems
• Early detection of invasive insect species
• Bionomics of mosquitoes and biting midges
• Agricultural pest management
• Vector-borne disease transmission

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on integrating citizen science with traditional entomological surveillance methods, mapping vector distributions, and studying the behavior of disease-carrying insects in the Mediterranean region. His work addresses emerging public health threats from invasive mosquito species and their potential to transmit diseases like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.

Dr. Barceló has been involved in significant European research projects including EDENext, FruitFlyNet, and VectorNet, as well as national programs on vector diseases. His collaborative approach is evident in his numerous co-authored publications across multiple institutions.

As an educator, he teaches core courses in Zoology, Parasitology, and field-based biology, mentoring students through both theoretical instruction and practical field experiences.
