Sturken's research focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence as both a tool and creative collaborator in architectural visualization. He explores defamiliarization techniques to challenge conventional aesthetic evaluations and investigates the qualitative impact of machine learning's unpredictability on design processes.
His projects include the exhibition A City’s Playground (2015) at Atelier Gallery, Odd Aggregations in Conversation with Mark Foster Gage (2021) at ACADIA Conference, and Living with Disaster: Stories of Seven Regenerative Cities (2022) co-curated in Tokyo. These works highlight his interest in AI-driven design, regenerative urbanism, and experimental visualization.
Recent publications in The Urbanist, ACADIA Conference, ASCA Conference, and Offramp (2022) underscore his engagement with critical discourses in architecture and urbanism. He also serves as co-editor for Offramp Issue 18: Publics and FireCity FireLand: Towards Regenerative Urbanism, and is the chief editor of the upcoming Regenerative Urbanism (2023).
Sturken's exhibitions and publications collectively demonstrate a commitment to redefining architectural practice through interdisciplinary collaboration, machine intelligence, and regenerative urban frameworks.
