Carlo Barbante is a Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, affiliated with the Department of Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Statistics. He also directs the Institute of Polar Sciences at the National Research Council (CNR), leading research on climate proxies in ice cores. His laboratory is based at the Scientific Campus in Venice.
Barbante's research focuses on paleoclimate reconstruction using ice cores, trace element geochemistry, and pollutant dynamics in polar regions. Key interests include developing mass spectrometry methods for ultra-trace analysis, studying heavy metals/organic contaminants in ice, and linking atmospheric chemistry to Quaternary climate shifts. His work frequently involves Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.
His publications emphasize environmental chemistry and climate science, with recent articles analyzing microplastics in Arctic snow, ice core impurities, and halogen cycling. Trends show a strong focus on high-resolution analytical techniques (e.g., LA-ICP-MS) and interdisciplinary approaches to environmental change.
Scientific awards include:
- ERC Advanced Grant (2010)
- Membership in Istituto Veneto di Scienze (2013)
- Premio Ca’Foscari for Research (2010)
- StartCup Veneto innovation prize (2009)
He leads the Laboratory for Complexity Safety and has advised polar research initiatives, including drilling campaigns in Antarctica and Greenland. His team collaborates with international networks like SCAR and IASC.
