Carla Ramirez is a Professor of intercultural pedagogy and educational guidance at NTNU’s Department of Pedagogy and Lifelong Learning, within the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences. She holds a Master’s (2005) and PhD (2015) from NTNU, focusing on pedagogy and minority youth experiences.
Her research examines social inequality, belonging/outsiderhood, and the unconscious reproduction of exclusion in educational contexts. Key themes include critical theory, decolonial perspectives, and indigenous knowledge. She emphasizes embodied knowledge and emotional awareness in teaching, advocating for hybrid knowledge systems to promote liberation and social justice.
Current roles include Program Manager for NTNU’s Master’s in Counseling for Children and Adolescents, course responsibility for PED6031 (Counseling in a Diverse Society) and PED6040 (Intercultural Counseling), and LIM representative (equality/diversity/inclusion) at the Faculty. She leads research projects on pedagogy of discomfort, cross-cultural upbringing, and narratives of ethnic minority academics in Norway.
Recent publications (2023–2025) explore material entanglements in academia, Barbie doll play as racialization sites, and national identity transformations. Her work critiques colorblindness in education and advocates for inclusive pedagogical frameworks.
Ramirez co-leads the Worldviews research group, examining encounters with hegemonic value systems. She has no listed scientific awards but is actively involved in public debates on diversity in academia and schools.
