Carla Hernández Garavito is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research focuses on how communities in the Peruvian Andes integrated imperial institutions from the 15th century onward, with an emphasis on the enduring and transformative role of artisan-craft partnerships during political upheaval. She collaborates with traditional potters in Peru to explore how such partnerships have facilitated political agency across historical periods. Garavito, a Peruvian archaeologist trained outside the U.S., is committed to supporting transfer students and fostering academic success at UCSC.
Her research interests include archaeological methodologies, indigenous agency, and the intersection of material culture with political history.
