Carla Cribari-Assali is a Lecturer II in the Residential College (RC) at the University of Michigan, specializing in German language instruction, cultural anthropology, and humanities. She joined the faculty in 2019 with a PhD in Applied Social Sciences from the University of Stirling (Scotland). Her academic background combines Lebanese-German heritage with expertise in cross-cultural studies and ethnographic research. She teaches German Intensive courses, Cultural Anthropology, and Social Theory & Practice modules, emphasizing experiential learning through creative methods like theater, filmmaking, and photography.
Her research focuses on child well-being, including studies of Tibetan refugees in India and the Bena tribe in Papua New Guinea. She integrates cultural comparison and multiculturalism into her pedagogy. Beyond academia, Carla directed socially engaged music theater productions in Heidelberg addressing issues like human trafficking and taught acting to diverse audiences. She also maintains a connection to agriculture through White Lotus Farms.
Carla’s interdisciplinary approach bridges anthropology, language education, and the arts, fostering engagement with global perspectives among students. She holds no listed scientific awards but is recognized for innovative teaching methods and community-oriented projects.
