Carl Smith, Ph.D., is a Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Arkansas's Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design. He holds concurrent appointments as the ArchiScape Visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield (2020-2024) and is a Fellow of the Landscape Institute (UK) and Chartered Geographer. His international practice and academic work focus on landscape sustainability and urban design pedagogy.
Education:
Ph.D. in Architectural Studies (Sustainable Housing Design) from the University of Sheffield, M.A. and Pg.Dip. in Landscape Design (Sheffield), Pg.Cert. in Urban Design (Newcastle upon Tyne), and B.Sc. in Environmental Science (Lancaster).
Research Focus:
Smith investigates anthropogenic landscape change, place-consciousness, and sustainable urbanism. His work emphasizes public perceptions of residential density, the role of drawing in documenting place experiences, and design studio pedagogy. Current projects analyze post-pandemic place adaptation and green recovery strategies through interdisciplinary lenses spanning geography, art, and social science.
