Carl R. Rice is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Greek and Roman Studies at Vassar College, joining the faculty in 2023. His research focuses on late Roman society, religion, and citizenship, particularly the intersection of religious identity and legal privilege in the late empire. He is currently developing a book proposal titled Roman Religion and the Citizens of Empire, 250-450 CE.

His teaching portfolio includes courses on Roman history, Latin language and literature, and gender/sexuality in antiquity. Research interests span Roman law, citizenship paradigms, and socio-religious dynamics in late antiquity.
Selected publications include analyses of religious violence under the Tetrarchs and contributions to discussions on world language preservation. He is a first-generation, low-income graduate from Appalachia.
