Joel Walker is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Washington, specializing in Late Antiquity across western Eurasia from prehistory to the Mongol Empire. He teaches undergraduate surveys of the ancient world alongside specialized courses on ancient Iran, late antiquity, the Mongols, and seminars on Jerusalem history and animal-human relations.

- Late Antiquity and Sasanian Empire (224-651 CE) with focus on Christian communities
- East Syrian hagiography and book culture in the Church of the East
- Shrine topography and religious spaces in ancient societies

- Human-animal relationships from Paleolithic to late Roman periods
- Comparative studies of Jerusalem across historical eras
