Carl Martin Peter Nilsson is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Odontology, University of Copenhagen since July 2022. Previously, he served as Associate Professor at the Costerton Biofilm Center (University of Copenhagen) from 2020-2022 and as Assistant Professor there from 2015-2019. His research focuses on biofilm-related projects, particularly antimicrobial tolerance mechanisms and compounds that interfere with biofilm formation.
Education:
- PhD in Microbiology from SLU, Uppsala (1995-2001)
- Master of Science in Agriculture (Biotechnology program) from SLU, Uppsala (1989-1999)
Research Interests: Dr. Nilsson's research spans biofilm formation, antimicrobial tolerance mechanisms, and the development of anti-biofilm compounds. His work primarily focuses on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus mutans, investigating how these bacteria form biofilms and develop resistance to antibiotics. He employs advanced techniques including recombinant DNA/RNA methods, protein purification, bioinformatics, and various biofilm models to understand bacterial pathogenesis at the molecular level.
Publication Trends: Dr. Nilsson's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on biofilm-related research, particularly on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and anti-biofilm compounds like Disperazol. His work bridges microbiology, molecular biology, and pharmaceutical development, with increasing emphasis on translational applications for treating biofilm-associated infections.

Laboratory Expertise: Dr. Nilsson has extensive hands-on experience with recombinant DNA/RNA techniques, phage display, protein purification, Biacore affinity analyses, confocal microscopy, in vitro binding assays, bioinformatics studies, various biofilm models, fermentation of microorganisms, FISH, RT-qPCR, and HTS-devices.
