Carl Hausman is a Professor of Journalism at Rowan University’s Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts. He holds an M.A. from Antioch and a Ph.D. from the Union Institute and University. His research focuses on media ethics, new technologies in journalism, media economy, and cultural criticism. A seasoned journalist and educator, Hausman has authored over two dozen books, including influential works on media deception, communication skills, and broadcast production. He received the 2021 Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award and the 2019 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. As National Chairman of the National Headliner Awards’ broadcast division, he oversees one of the U.S.’s oldest journalism prize programs.
Hausman’s teaching career includes developing Rowan’s journalism master’s program, creating nine courses, and designing a new media concentration. His curriculum innovations transitioned the department from print-based to multi-track offerings in broadcast news, new media, and editing/publishing. He has also produced ten audiobooks on media, history, and western fiction under his pseudonym Carl Dane. Beyond academia, his professional experience spans TV anchoring, magazine editing, and voiceover work.
His scholarly contributions bridge theory and practice, addressing contemporary issues like entrepreneurial journalism, digital media’s economic impact, and ethical challenges in modern media landscapes. His work emphasizes practical skills for journalists and clear communication in both professional and public contexts.
