Carl Anderson serves as Head of the Human Genetics Programme and Senior Group Leader at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, where he leads the Genomics of Inflammation and Immunity research group. His work focuses on leveraging human genetic variation to gain causal insights into disease biology, with particular emphasis on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
Dr. Anderson completed his academic training with a BSc and MSc in Biomedical Science and Genetic Epidemiology at the University of Sheffield, followed by a PhD in Quantitative Genetics at the University of Edinburgh under Peter Visscher, with the final two years conducted at the University of Brisbane. In 2007, he joined the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium at Oxford to work on IBD genetics before moving to the Sanger Institute where he established his independent research program.
His research integrates cutting-edge genomic technologies including genome-wide association studies (GWAS), whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing, single-cell RNA sequencing, and CRISPR-based functional screens. His group has identified more than 280 genetic loci associated with IBD, uncovering novel disease mechanisms such as the role of autophagy in IBD pathogenesis. Several genes identified through his research are now targets of drugs undergoing clinical trials for immune-mediated disorders. In 2016, he strategically expanded his group to include wet lab capabilities, enabling high-throughput cellular screening approaches that bridge genetic associations with biological mechanisms.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals increasing integration of multi-omics approaches and computational methods to translate genetic associations into biological understanding. His work shows growing emphasis on translational applications including polygenic risk scoring, treatment response prediction, and fine-mapping of causal variants across immune-mediated diseases.
Dr. Anderson is deeply committed to collaborative science as demonstrated by his longstanding membership in the UK IBD Genetics Consortium, co-PI role on the IBD Bioresource (over 30,000 patients), and participation in the International IBD Genetics Consortium management committee. His open and collaborative approach has established him as a central figure in the IBD research community.
As Director of Graduate Studies at the Sanger Institute, he mentors the next generation of genomic scientists. His group website (www.andersonlab.info) highlights ongoing projects in genetic architecture of immune diseases, functional validation of disease-associated variants, and development of precision medicine approaches for IBD patients.
