Carl A.P. Ruck is a Professor of Classical Studies at Boston University. He specializes in the intersection of ancient religions, entheogens, and human consciousness. His research focuses on Dionysian rituals, ancient mystery cults, and the role of psychoactive substances in religious evolution. Ruck earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University (1965) after completing degrees at Yale (B.A., 1955) and the University of Michigan (M.A., 1959).
- Key Research Areas:
- Ecstatic rituals of Dionysus
- Entheogens in religious origins
- Medieval and Renaissance secret sacraments
- Greek epigraphy and linguistics
His work challenges traditional historiography, proposing that entheogens were central to early religious practices. Notable publications include Persephone’s Quest and Entheogens, Myth, and Human Consciousness.
Ruck’s current projects explore the Eleusinian Mysteries and their psychedelic underpinnings, as seen in his video presentation here.
